¡Hola! I am Amalia. I am an independent teacher, certified by the Rafael Landívar University of Guatemala to teach Spanish as a second language, and I studied international relations at the University of San Carlos. I have taught Spanish online since 2010, to more than 500 students from the United States and Europe.
I live in Antigua, Guatemala, a very charming city that is famous for its personalized Spanish instruction. I love traveling, geography, gardening, politics, making new friends and, of course, teaching Spanish in a personalized, interesting and fun way.
I feel fortunate: with most of my students I have created a bond of friendship, not just a lesson. I have friends in many parts of the world because of these classes, and that is still my favorite part of the job.
My accent in Spanish is neutral and clear. That is an advantage for my students: they understand better and learn faster, whether they need it in a meeting in Mexico City, a call with Madrid or a dinner in Bogotá.
Who says that learning Spanish has to be boring?
Lessons with me are fun, dynamic and creative. We learn the language with the tools that are out there, like music, movies or videos, and with the material you actually work with. It is never too late to start.
No matter the subject or the focus of the lesson, humor, laughter and small jokes are a must in every class: they break the ice and make the hour more enjoyable.
Beyond the lessons, I founded Proyecto Sonrisas, a community project that works for the education of children in Las Delicias, in the south of Guatemala.
Spanish from the first lesson, at your level
The experience of personalized classes has taught me to start speaking Spanish from the first lesson. Please, do not be scared: we are a team, and I will guide you through verbs, vocabulary, comprehension, grammar rules, pronunciation and the different aspects of the language. I have experience with all types of students: beginners, intermediate and advanced.
The Spanish I use is your Spanish
Everything I say is at your level and personalized. That sets the pace, so that our conversations, readings and comprehension become more complex over time. If you only speak in the present, I will speak only in the present as well.
Mistakes are how we learn
I love when students participate and are not afraid to make mistakes. After all, this is how we learn a language. I know that conversation can be difficult, and I will make sure to give you the confidence to speak Spanish.
